Even though Google has pretty much established monopoly over the internet search engine arena, Microsoft launched its answer to Google, the Bing, in 2009. With much fanfare, the Bing was touted to overthrow Google’s reign on internet searches, and while the Bing was off to a slow start, it did find quite a few takers initially. Bing fans stated that it delivered far more relevant search results on account of its more efficient search algorithms in comparison to Google....

Microsoft made these official comments in a statement issued to The Verge, which had asked about recent changes to the Microsoft Services Agreement. Namely, some interesting language about Xbox online services which some had interpreted as a rebranding. In fact, it was just a legalese term for Xbox services including cross-saves and friend requests, intended to differentiate those features from the Xbox Live Gold subscription itself. The jobs range from producers, artists to programmers and animators for work on Halo Waypoint to other positions for what’s described as a “new experience in the Halo universe.” With Halo: Reach coming out in the not-too-distant future, could we be seeing Halo 4? Bloomberg recently spoke with various former and current members of the Xbox/Microsoft team about the console for an oral history. To hear some of the sources tell it, ahead of the system’s launch, Microsoft tasked various people in charge of its business development with acquiring exclusive games. Bob McBreen, head of Xbox’s business development, confirmed that EA was the first company they reached out to. EA, of course, is known for its sports-game franchises, among other titles, but the developer told Microsoft, “No, thanks....

However, while it might seem like the VR market is already leaning towards oversaturation, especially considering none of these devices are actually for sale yet, there looms another major company who is reportedly considering a foray into VR. We speak, of course, of Microsoft who, it is now reported, spent some $150 million to purchase augmented reality assets. A post on Medium by Jon Friedman head of Office design at Microsoft revealed that, “this is just the beginning of a cross-company effort to update all icons in the same style.” The goal is to create a more consistent look on all Microsoft products across all platforms with icons that contain more information and are easier on the eye. A part of Friedman’s blog post included Windows 10 concept images that have updated modern icons for several other built-in applications including news, mail and photos....

Overall Q4 fiscal earnings show revenue of $17.37 billion - up 8% from the same period in 2010. This helped to generate $6.2 billion in profit for the company, not too bad in a period of such economic turmoil. The full financial year brought in $69.94 billion of revenue, 12% higher than the previous year. Overall these are positive numbers for Microsoft, though they do mask areas which aren’t doing so great....

Updates to professional profiles on LinkedIn have revealed that Microsoft’s video game supergroup has added four more developers to the team. The new hires are Sean Slayback, who has worked on Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Ryan Duffin who has worked on Anthem as well as several Battlefield games, Justin Walters who worked on Star Wars Battlefront 2, and Ryan Trowbridge who worked on Days Gone and on every Naughty Dog game from Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune to Uncharted: A Thief’s End....

Microsoft has started sending out fresh invites for a special “Surface Reception” event on October 25, with main focus on Windows 8. The invitation comes with Microsoft’s new logo along with Windows logo amidst New York’s grey skyscrapers with color hues in between. The event is scheduled to begin at 10 am EST. Details regarding the pricing of the tablet is expected to be uncovered at the event. Rumors suggest that it could cost $600-$800....

The company currently sells the Surface Book, Surface Pro, Surface Laptop and Surface Go, all or any of which could see design or spec updates at the event. But all eyes will be on whether the project codenamed Centaurus will debut in any way. Rather than a foldable phone, it is rumoured to be a dual screen tablet/laptop hybrid. If the case, Microsoft will try and boldly lead the industry forward in hardware design, something it hasn’t done since the success of the Surface Pro....

However, its latest financial figures are arguably the most impressive. According to an official press release, in the three months to the end of December 2020 (Q2 FY21) Surface revenue increased by 3% year-on-year. Perhaps more significantly, Microsoft Surface is now a US$2bn business in its own right. This growth was driven by three product launches, with the second-gen Surface Pro X joined by brand new devices in the Surface Laptop Go and Surface Duo (currently US-only)....

Michigan residents have pushed back against Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s stay-at-home order, which directed nonessential businesses to close and limited food service establishments to takeout and delivery, for months. As some industries began to reopen across the state earlier in May, representatives from the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association (MRLA), which advocates for members of the state’s hospitality sector, issued a request to Whitmer that called for reopening dining rooms by the end of May....

Unofficial results show Michigan State graduates Brianna Scott and Kelly Tebay were the top vote-getters Tuesday for two open seats on the East Lansing school’s eight-member board.
