Microsoft has stealthily done away with fees for developers issuing updates to their games. This bit of news is something that indie developers have struggled with for quite some time, as it sounds like these “fees” were overly expensive. Double Fine’s Tim Schaffer stated that it would have cost his team somewhere around $40,000 just to issue one patch, so it’s immediately obvious why smaller developers simply couldn’t afford to issue updates....

Adding even more credibility to the $150 price is the recent suggestion that the unit actually costs that much to manufacture. According to the website Develop, a “highly-positioned, trusted source” has confirmed Kinect’s “$150 manufacturing cost.” Granted, technology is often sold at a loss, at least initially. That said, between the chorus of retailers and the (unconfirmed) manufacturing costs, the $150 price tag looks like a reality. At $150, Kinect comes in at a substantially higher price than Sony’s PlayStation Move, which will be available in a bundle (including the PlayStation Eye, a Move motion controller, and the game Sports Champions ) for $99....

This hasn’t come as a huge surprise: it’s essentially a shrunk-down version of the main Surface Laptop with slightly weaker specs. But that’s reflected in the price, with entry-level models just about cheap enough to be considered budget laptops. While the original version was slightly underwhelming, 2022’s second generation was a significant step forward. It’s easy to recommend, although there’s still plenty of room for improvement. Hopefully, Microsoft will address some of these weaknesses in the third generation, although it’s unlikely to arrive anytime soon....
